The FreightWaves executive team and panel of experts have collectively managed over $60B in freight contracts and deeply understands the market volatility challenges within the trucking and logistics industry. Coupled with a team of veteran trading exchange and regulatory executives, the FreightWaves team is creating a solution that solves for an unserved and highly addressable market need – trucking rate and capacity volatility.

Craig Fuller: Chief Executive Officer & Founder

Craig Fuller is the CEO and founder of FreightWaves, the leading provider of data and analytics for the global logistics industry. FreightWaves provides the fastest view of transportation and logistics market activity, across all modes. The company is also the No.1 source for media and market analytics in the global freight industry.

Prior to founding FreightWaves, he was the founder and CEO of TransCard, a fleet payment processor that was sold to US Bank. He also has been deep in the freight industry, having founded and managed the largest provider of on-demand trucking services in North America, the Xpress Direct division of US Xpress Enterprises.

George Abernathy: President

George Abernathy has responsibility for all revenue and commercial efforts at FreightWaves, including SaaS, Trucking Freight Futures and membership engagements. He is the former President of Transplace, a leading provider of non-asset based third-party logistics and truck brokerage services. He also held the COO role and was a key contributor in the company’s sale to Greenbriar Equity Partners in 2013. George has more than 30 years of supply chain and transportation industry leadership experience with carrier, broker and technology companies. Previously, he held senior management positions at J.B. Hunt, Logistics.com, Sabre, Transflo and North American Van Lines.

Spencer Piland, Chief Financial Officer

Spencer is the CFO of FreightWaves. His is a startup veteran, leading finance teams through periods of hyper-growth at four venture-backed startups: Namely, Plated, NJOY and LivingSocial. Over the course of his career, Spencer has played key roles in over $700mm in equity capital raises, $150mm in debt capital raises and $3bn of M&A transactions.

He joined Namely prior to the Series D to build the company’s FP&A department and lead the investor relations, sales operations and real estate functions. Spencer joined Plated following the close of the Series B where he ran strategic finance (FP&A, Corp Dev, IR and Strategic Planning). He ran point as the company’s “internal investment banker” on the company’s successful exit to Albertsons and the subsequent integration.

Spencer began his career as an analyst at Stephens Inc. in Little Rock, AR in the company’s corporate investment banking division. He later spent time at Blackstreet Capital Management, a $100mm special situations private equity group. Spencer earned his Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from the Sam M. Walton College of Business at the University of Arkansas where he met his wife, Jessica. In his free time, Spencer enjoys playing tennis, watching college football and grilling out.

Emily Szink, EVP of Media

Emily Szink is the EVP of Media at FreightWaves overseeing editorial, TV and Audio. Emily is an award-winning journalist with close to a decade of on-camera experience.  She has done almost every kind of reporting from sports, to the breaking news and court beat, to lifestyle reporting.  

Emily’s TV career started in Dayton, Ohio when she was still a senior at the University of Dayton.  She beat out hundreds of hopefuls in an “American Idol” style contest to become the face of the Dayton’s CW Network. 

After Dayton, Emily moved to the Black Hills of South Dakota to be the Morning Anchor for Rapid City’s NBC affiliate.  Emily just couldn’t get enough of her 2 a.m. alarm clock and continued her morning news career in Omaha, Nebraska where she worked for almost six years. While in Nebraska, Emily won numerous local, state and regional awards for her exclusive interviews and original reporting. 

Emily came to FreightWaves in May of 2019 as FreightWavesTV’s first anchor.

Fergus Caldicott: Chief Technology Officer

Fergus Caldicott is passionate about providing the right solutions to customers that deliver on their needs. At FreightWaves, he is responsible for the product, technology and data science teams. Previously he was Vice President Technology at DAT Solutions, the largest freight load board and freight data analytics provider. Fergus also served as General Manager of Getloaded Inc and was instrumental in its acquisition, executive management and eventual integration into DAT. He has also served on the board of the Transportation Intermediaries Association. Fergus has more than 25 years of experience leading world-class software organizations, from small Bay Area startups to multinationals such as BT and Mars Incorporated.

John “JT” Engstrom, Chief Strategy Officer

John “JT” Engstrom serves as FreightWaves’ Chief Strategy Officer, overseeing the Market Expert team of analysts, FreightWaves’ proprietary research group Freight Intel, and the commercial engagement team. Engstrom will also help with corporate strategy, partnerships, and prepare the company for the next stage of growth.

Prior to joining FreightWaves, JT was a top Transportation & Logistics analyst and Wall Street investment banker at STIFEL. While at STIFEL, in partnership with Board of Advisors member John Larkin, JT was consistently ranked among the top three equity analysts by StarMine in both the road & rail as well as airfreight & logistics categories between 2014 and 2018. Throughout his tenure in investment banking in 2018 and 2019 JT focused on public market, private equity, and family office deals completing nearly $1 Billion in transactions in trucking and asset light logistics.

Prior to that JT was in Oliver Wyman’s Transportation & Logistics management consulting practice. Engstrom’s first job out of college was writing route optimization models and algorithms for truckload carriers.

Daniel Pickett, CFA: Head of Data Science

Daniel Pickett leads the FreightWaves data science team collecting, cleaning and analyzing freight market data to drive actionable insights in the freight markets. The data team is focused on finding industry activity metrics to inform the freight/logistics community about market conditions at the local (not national) level. Using his career blend of technology and capital markets, Daniel is also focused on what real-time logistics data can provide regarding the health of the economy, the consumer and global trade.
